Donald was born and raised in Georgia. He has a bachelor's degree in business from University of Georgia. He moved to Alpharetta in 2004.

Donald owns design firm Donald Mitchell Design, Inc.

Donald Mitchell is currently the Alpharetta city council member representing Post 1. He was first elected in 2011 during a special election and has served two full terms. He is mayor pro tem and served as acting mayor when Mayor David Belle Isle stepped down in 2018 to run for Georgia Secretary of State.

As a city council member, he advocated for the arts and architectural aesthetics of the city.
