Dontaye is from Orlando, Florida. He studied broadcast journalism at Florida A&M University. He and his wife, Karen, live with their daughter.

Dontaye owns a public relations firm that assists attorneys with media relations. He previously led the Fulton County District Attorney's Public Affairs Department and worked as a morning show producer in Florida.
