Rusty was Assistant Secretary for Congressional and Intergovernmental Relations in the first Bush Administration. He oversaw the department's disaster relief response to Hurricane Hugo and the 1989 San Francisco earthquake. He was chair of the Georgia Republican Party and was on the Republican National Committee. He was also chair of the Sandy Springs/Perimeter Center Chamber of Commerce.

Russell "Rusty" Paul is currently the mayor of Sandy Springs. He was first elected in November 2013 and has served two terms. He was previously a Georgia State Senator and a member of the Stone Mountain City Council. ​
