Harry is from Canton, Georgia. He attended Cherokee High School. He lives with his wife in Cherokee County and is a member of Heritage Baptist Fellowship.

Harry has a bachelor's and master's degree in Finance and Accounting from Georgia State University. Harry is a Certified Public Accountant and former accounting manager with Southern Company and Georgia Power.

Harry Johnston is currently serving as the County Commission Chair for Cherokee County. He was elected in 2018. Previously, he served as the District 1 Commissioner from 2000 to 2014.
