Brake, in expressing his concerns to the Telegram in more detail, said he believes in this day and time in the climate and environment nationally, there needs to be a re-establishment of relationships with the community and local partners in order to better serve the community.

“I think a lot of the crime and the drug usage and the sale of illegal drugs in Nash County is because we don’t have the appropriate relationships to get information,” Brake said. “I believe that we should have our deputies in the community — and I think that would eliminate a lot of our problems.”

Before joining the sheriff's office, he worked as a state corrections officer. He also served in the U.S. Marines, participating in two combat campaigns: the liberation of Panama and the liberation of Kuwait.
