Keith started his career in law enforcement in 1984 as a Jailer with the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office. He was certified as a Deputy in 1986 and remained in that capacity until he became a member of the North Carolina Highway Patrol in 1987. Keith Stone retired from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol in 2012.

Nash County Sheriff Keith Stone on Tuesday won another four-year term in office with an overwhelming majority of votes cast.

Complete but unofficial results showed Stone, a Republican, received 21,596 votes, or 61.8 percent, while Democratic challenger David Brake received 13,570 votes, or 38.2 percent.

On Thursday, during a traffic stop on Interstate 95, Sheriff Stone called for backup from K-9 Waldo and his handler after seeing signs of possible illegal activity. A search following the canine alert found drugs and money.

“It is imperative that we make every effort to protect the lives of all citizens in Nash County and provide a safe interstate for the public,” says Stone. “If a person travels through Nash County with criminal intentions, it is our job to stop it.

Public Safety

Calls for jail upgrades, saying housing 40 inmates in a single housing unit makes the jail difficult to manage.

In March, five inmates broke through wiring, hopped two gates and got out of the jail.

Even then, Sheriff Stone said he knew the building was in need of repair.

"I think there is a definite need for an upgrade," he said. "There's a serious need for this and in my opinion, any time you have forty inmates in one pod system, it makes it very difficult to manage."

Sheriff Stone said there were no officers present in the area where the five men broke out, only a camera. He said the camera had a blind spot and the inmates took advantage.

Nash County jail ordered to depopulate after multiple inmate escapes

Pledged not to return inmates to the jail until its doors were repaired and the facility was secure.

After that escape, Sheriff Stone said 88 inmates had been moved to more secure locations.

"I'm taking these people out of here, and not putting them back in here until these doors are fixed and the jail is secure," said Sheriff Keith Stone. "We're going to work tirelessly through the night, and it's going to be a long night and it's going to be a long tomorrow. But we're going to bring him back to justice."

Keith is the sheriff of Nash County. He previously worked as a special agent with the North Carolina Alcohol Law Enforcement Agency from 2013 to 2018.
