Clinton was born and raised in Savannah. He has a degree from Savannah State University.

Clinton is retired. He previously worked as a third-generation commercial fisherman and at vending machine company Young American Vendors. He is a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Clinton Young previously ran for state representative of District 165 but did not win the Democratic primary. He is running as a Democrat. He also ran for a Savannah City Council at-large post in 2007, 2011 and 2015 but did not win.
